What Really Happens After You Hire an Interior Designer in Pune: Week-by-Week Timeline

You've just signed the contract with your interior designer. The excitement is real, but so is that nagging question: "Okay, now what actually happens?"

Most homeowners tell us this is the most stressful part—the unknown territory between signing papers and getting keys to their dream home. Will contractors show up on time? When do you need to make decisions? What if something goes wrong?

After completing 500+ projects across Pune through Divya Jain Interiors, we've learned that anxiety comes from uncertainty. So let's eliminate that uncertainty right now.

Here's exactly what happens, week by week, in a typical 3BHK turnkey interior project.

The Big Picture: 90 Days from Contract to Keys

Before we dive into weekly details, here's what those 90 days look like:

Weeks 1-2: Design finalization & material procurement

Weeks 3-8: Major carpentry & structural work

Weeks 9-11: Finishing work (false ceiling, painting, hardware)

Weeks 12-13: Final touches, cleaning, handover

Your involvement: Heavy in weeks 1-2, moderate check-ins during weeks 3-8, final approvals in weeks 9-11.

Let's break down what actually happens in each phase.

Weeks 1-2: The Foundation Phase

What We're Doing:

Week 1 & 2:

     Final design review and sign-off

     Creating detailed execution drawings

Placing material orders (plywood, laminates, hardware)

Scheduling labors and assigning respective agencies.

Applying for society permissions (if needed)

Week 3:

     Materials begin arriving at site

Quality verification of every plywood sheet and laminate

     Setting up the work site

Briefing the carpentry team on designs

Your dedicated project manager confirms communication channels

What You're Doing:

Critical decisions needed:

Final approval on all 3D designs

Confirmation on Packages and internal / external material  from physical samples

Paint color Evaluation and soft explorations (we'll provide color cards at right stage)

Hardware finish selection (brass, chrome, black, etc.)

Your time investment: 3-4 hours total across both weeks for approvals and selections.

Communication:

You'll receive a WhatsApp message with photos when materials arrive, showing quality verification in progress.

Weeks 4-5: The Building (Structure) Phase

What We're Doing:

Week 4-5:

Carpentry framework begins (wardrobe carcasses, kitchen base structures)

Electrical rough-in (concealed wiring, new points)

     False ceilings

Any civil work (if included in scope)

     Daily progress photos shared

Week 6-7:

     Kitchen cabinets taking shape

     Bedroom furniture frameworks completed

     Living room units structural work

     False ceiling framework installation

Starting to prep for upholstery orders and home making

What's visible: By end of Week 6, you can see all your furniture in skeletal form. Wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, TV units—all framed out in plywood, waiting for shutters and finishing.

What You're Doing:

Site visits (optional but recommended): One visit in Week 4 and one in Week 6 to see progress.

Decisions needed:

Minor adjustments if you notice something during site visit (position of a shelf, height of a counter)

Approval of any change orders (only if you requested modifications)

Your time investment: 2-3 hours total (two 1-hour site visits)

Payment Milestone:

After material unloading and verification (typically end of Week 3-4), you'll pay the structure phase amount (typically 50% of project value, minus token already paid).

Communication:

Weekly progress call (15 minutes) + daily photo updates via WhatsApp showing work completed that day.

Weeks 7-9: The Transformation Phase

What We're Doing:

Week 7:

     False ceiling gypsum board installation

Shutter installation begins (wardrobes, kitchen cabinets)

     Drawers and internal fittings

     Initial electrical point testing

Week 8:

Wall preparation for painting (putty application, sanding)

     Primer coat application

Hardware installation begins (telescopic channels, hinges)

Week 9:

     First coat of paint

     Kitchen countertop installation

     Bathroom vanity installation

Your apartment starts looking like the 3D renders!

The magic moment: By Week 9, most clients walk in and go "Oh wow, it's actually happening!" The skeletal frameworks now have shutters, colors are appearing on walls, and it finally feels like YOUR home.

What You're Doing:

Site visit (recommended): One visit in Week 8 to see color application and approve paint shades on actual walls (colors look different in different lighting).

Decisions needed:

Final confirmation on paint colors (seeing them on walls vs color cards)

Hardware handles selection if not done earlier

Your time investment: 1-2 hours for site visit

Payment Milestone:

Before hardware installation and external finishing begins (typically early Week 9), you'll pay for the hardware and outer finish phase (typically 35% of project value).

Weeks 10-11: The Finishing Phase

What We're Doing:

Week 10:

     Second and final paint coats

     All hardware installation completed

     Mirror and glass installation

     Electrical fixtures and switches

     Door installation and alignment

Week 11:

     Final carpentry touch-ups

     Silicon sealing (kitchen, bathrooms)

Hardware adjustment (ensuring smooth drawer glides)

     Lighting testing

     Snagging (fixing any minor imperfections)

Quality checks: We conduct room-by-room inspections, checking every drawer, every shutter alignment, every paint corner.

What You're Doing:

Pre-final inspection: End of Week 10, we invite you for a walkthrough to identify anything that needs adjustment before final handover.

Your time investment: 2 hours for detailed walkthrough

Payment Milestone:

Before painting phase completion (typically Week 10), you'll pay the paint phase amount (typically 10% of project value).

Weeks 12-13: The Handover Phase

What We're Doing:

Week 12:

     Deep cleaning of entire apartment

     Removing all construction dust, debris

Polish application on surfaces where needed

     Final lighting and electrical testing

     Preparing handover documentation

Week 13:

     Final walkthrough with you

Demonstrating hardware usage (hydraulic beds, soft-close mechanisms)

Handing over all warranties (extended by manufacturers)

Handing over after sales contact list for future needs

Care and maintenance guide for all materials

The handover moment: We walk you through each room, explaining care instructions, showing you how everything works, and celebrating the transformation together.

What You're Doing:

Final inspection: 2-3 hour detailed walkthrough with checklist.

Your responsibility:

     Point out anything needing adjustment

Test all drawers, shutters, lights, switches

     Ask questions about maintenance

Final payment: After satisfactory inspection and handover, final 5% payment completes the project.

What Could Cause Delays (And How We Handle Them)

Let's be honest—not every project finishes exactly on day 90. Here's what could add time:

On Your Side:

Delayed decisions: Each pending approval adds 2-5 days

Solution: We send you material samples and options early, with clear deadlines

Mid-project changes: Changing design after work begins adds 5-15 days

Solution: We perfect designs in Weeks 1-2, get your 100% sign-off before execution

Payment delays: Work pauses until payment clears

Solution: We send payment reminders 3 days before milestone completion

On Our Side:

Material delays: Rare, but custom items sometimes take longer

Solution: We order materials with 10-day buffer, keep you informed immediately if delays occur

Labor shortages: During festival seasons (Diwali, etc.)

Solution: We plan projects around festival calendars, build buffers into timeline

Society restrictions: Some societies limit work hours or days

Solution: We check society rules before starting, adjust timeline accordingly

External Factors:

Monsoon: Heavy rains can delay painting by 3-7 days (moisture issues)

Solution: We plan painting phases outside monsoon months when possible

Our promise: If WE cause delays, we absorb the cost. If external factors cause delays, we explain transparently and adjust timeline with your approval.

Red Flags in Other Designers' Processes

When evaluating interior designers, watch for:

🚩 No clear timeline: "It takes 2-4 months" is too vague

✅ What to expect: Week-by-week milestone dates

🚩 No communication plan: "We'll update you when needed"

✅ What to expect: Scheduled weekly calls + daily photo updates

🚩 No project manager: You deal with multiple people

What to expect: Single point of contact throughout

🚩 Vague payment terms: "We'll let you know when payment is due"

✅ What to expect: Payment milestones tied to visible progress

🚩 No post-handover support: "Call us if something breaks"

✅ What to expect: Scheduled follow-ups + warranty management

Your Responsibilities Throughout the Project

To ensure smooth execution, here's what we need from you:

Week 1-2:

Respond to material selection queries within 48 hours

Approve final designs by Week 2 end

Arrange site access for material delivery

Week 3-8:

Keep communication channels open (WhatsApp, calls)

Make site visit payments on scheduled dates

Be available for weekly 15-minute progress calls

Week 9-11:

     Attend pre-final inspection

     Point out any adjustments needed

     Approve final work

Week 12-13:

     Attend final handover

     Complete final payment

     Provide feedback for future improvements

Total time investment from you: 12-15 hours over 90 days. That's just 10 minutes per day on average.
