Why Pune Monsoons Are Particularly Challenging

Pune receives 600-700mm of rainfall between June and September. But it's not just the rain—it's the combination:

High Risk: Plain/Matte Laminates

● Prone to edge swelling and peeling

● Need edge banding done perfectly (often fails)

Better: High-Gloss Laminates

● Smoother surface repels moisture better

Best: Acrylic/PU Finishes

● No edges to absorb moisture

Critical Areas for Premium Finishes

Invest in acrylic/PU for:

● Kitchen base cabinets (₹1,600-2,200/sq ft)

● Overhead cabinets near sink

● Bathroom vanities

● Any cabinet within 3 feet of water source

Standard laminates work fine for:

● Bedroom wardrobes (away from moisture)

● Living room furniture

● Study tables and storage

Design Strategies That Beat Moisture

Materials alone aren't enough. Design plays a huge role.

1. Ventilation is Non-Negotiable

Wardrobes:

● Include ventilation grills (₹50-100 per grill)

● Position away from external walls if possible

● Leave 2-3 inch gap from wall for air circulation

Kitchens:

● Ensure chimney vents outside (not recirculating type)

● Include under-cabinet ventilation gaps

● Exhaust fan is mandatory, not optional

Bathrooms:

● Exhaust fan running 15 minutes post-shower

● Window if available (gold standard)

● Ventilation near ceiling (hot humid air rises)

Pro tip: During monsoon, run exhaust fans for 15 minutes even on non-shower days. Removes trapped humidity before it causes damage.

2. Drainage Slope Matters

Kitchen counters:

● Slight slope toward sink (1-2 degrees)

● Water doesn't pool near walls

● Backsplash should rise at least 2 feet

Bathroom vanities:

● Countertop sloped toward basin

● No flat areas where water collects

● Silicon sealing renewed every 18 months

3. Raised Plinths Prevent Water Seepage

Standard plinth height: 4 inches Monsoon-proof height: 6 inches minimum

● WPC boards: Water-resistant, looks like wood (₹400-600/sq ft)

● Aluminum frames: Outdoor/semi-outdoor cabinets

2. Bathrooms (Second Highest Risk)

3. Bedrooms Facing West/Southwest

The problem: Afternoon sun heats walls. Evening cooling creates condensation inside wardrobes placed against these walls.

● 3-inch gap between wardrobe and external wall

● Ventilation grills on wardrobe back panel

● Avoid storing leather items (absorbs moisture)

● Use silica gel packets in wardrobes during monsoon

Maintenance: Your Monsoon Checklist

Weekly (During Monsoon):

✅ Open all wardrobes for 30 minutes for air circulation
